Debt-Free Christian Living

Proverbs 22:7 - The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower [is] servant to the lender.

Who among us is debt-free? Or rather who among us here is not dept-free?

Long time ago, people save money to buy house and lot for their future home but nowadays saving money for future home is hard. Now people often loan houses from big Real Estate businesses instead of renting a house which won’t be yours someday which is quite typical and looks quite more promising. A lot of great deals are offered but of course most of them are overpriced.

As a Christian, our debts are like the sins that we have made. And somehow, most of us become slaves to sin. [Romans 6:16 -- Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?] For example, if we loaned a money from a person, we regard their rules of payment with respect and utmost sincerity.


Satan is very wise, he is like a roaring lion (1 Peter 5:8). He seeks whom he may devour. Did you know that this is how he deals with us. This means that we should be wise too. We might end up realizing that it is Satan who lent us help and not God in exchange for what we desire. He’ll do everything for us to be trapped in his devious plans. When we get indebted to him, we will continue serving him so be very aware of our actions. Here are some examples:

Pleasures in Lust

People often times mislead love from lust. Sometimes our longing for someone tend us to believe that we love that person. In exchange for that love (attention), we decide things almost immediately without even having thoughts if it is right or wrong. People having extra-marital affairs often find themselves trapped or slaved to their affairs specially if accidentally it beared fruit. I assure you that it is how Satan deals, he gives you pleasure and he'll make sure you'll be his slave and it will be hard for you to go back the same way again.

Once a person commits adultery, in order to hide their sins they will lie. One lie after another. Doing this, they continue to sin in order for them to continue their affairs.

Pleasure in Power

In politics, in order for the government officials to maintain their power, most of them bribe people. They bribe people in order for them to have supremacy over others but in exchange for their slavery to greed in power. They offer greed to Satan to experience a luxurious life and gain supremacy. If a threat is at hand, for example a witness in unraveling their greed for power they ask other people to make those witnesses remain silent by money or by permanent silence.

Pleasure in Wealth / Money

A lot of businessmen now are seeking advice from financial advisors how they may be able to evade taxes and other expenditures that greatly affect their income. They try to hide other profits and invent expenses in order for them to lessen taxes. Some of them lie and cheat in order for them to get more profit.

For poor people, some of them steal from others. Sadly in our country, the number of robbers and thieves on the street keep growing and they came to the point of killing their victims to keep their identities hidden. They kill, they terrorize people for them to have money and they keep on getting worst to protect themselves. They continue to do this after their first kill because they know, there is no turning back. They are trapped like how Satan deviced everything.

Worldly Pleasures

Innovation in technology is rapidly evolving and more inventions are done almost every year. From telephone to pagers, pagers to cellphones, cellphones to smartphones and now more smarter phones which involves tablet pcs with communication capabilities. These are the new technologies that keep evolving almost every 3 months. If you are a tech-freak, you’ll most likely buy the latest technology gadget and during this time, every 3 months there is a new gadget being introduced. People instead of investing their money to good use, they invest it in buying these things. And they offer time and money which is supposedly for God in exchange for these vanities. 

Notice that people get indebted to Satan if they value their worldly desires. To keep those valuable things to us we lie, we steal, we cheat, and to some they kill. It is hard to maintain a healthy living and we know that specially in this place. We get carried away by our problems and when we feel discouraged or discontented with what God gave us -we try to make our own way to get what we desire – and most of the time we sin to get those things and we become slaves to sin. We are being conformed into this world.

Romans 12:2  - And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what [is] that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

But there are two great things that will enable us to be debt-free.

Be Content

[2 Corinthians 12: 9 – And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.] God’s grace is sufficient. We do not need those things that will just make us slaves and indebted to Satan’s trap. God will provide for us.

Be God Dependent

[Phil 4:13 – I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.] We can do all things through Christ. When we say dependent, it means with trust. If we are contented to all His blessings and be dependent on Him, we’ll be able to withstand temptations in any form. And no worldly desires can keep us from sinning and we will be Debt-Free from Satan’s schemes.

And always remember that God is always with you:
[Let your] conversation [be] without covetousness; [and be] content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
